Large beads
Resins for aqueous applications
A selection of general purpose separation materials, resins and adsorbents, with a variety of functionalities. All are multi-purpose materials that can be evaluated for a wide range of organic molecules, and all are available for fast and simple testing.
Typical properties
- Cross-linking: moderate
- Good swelling and capacity in water
- Porosity: gel-type or mesoporous, optimal for small molecules
- Particle size distribution: 200 to 1200 um
Resins combine different backbone chemistries with different surface chemistries. Polarities span hydrophobic reversed phase (RP) and medium hydrophobicity (MH) through to polar ion exchangers (IEX).
Resins in the 0.2 to 1 mm size range. The beads are highly porous, especially when swollen in water or another suitable solvent.
Start with a screening kit
A useful starting point for an exploratory evaluation is a collection of appropriate resins as a kit. For unknown or new separation routes it is worth evaluating several resins at once, which gives a quick read on retention behaviour in the mixture, whether the goal is to retain the target molecule or to remove undesired compounds.
Resins with identical specifications can still differ in selectivity and performance, because resin architecture and the position of functional groups vary.
Application areas
These materials are aimed at retaining small organic molecules: phytochemicals, active pharmaceutical ingredients, pharmaceutical building blocks and their side products, environmental residues such as pesticides, and biogenic contaminants such as natural toxins and antinutritionals.
For a given application, a selection of resins is chosen for screening. The user determines whether one of the materials can solve the separation under their own conditions.
Once a resin is identified, the process can be optimised further, either to improve selective binding so the target is separated or removed, or to fractionate the components and isolate the target.
Representative screening result: percentage binding of a target molecule across different resins.
