Rigid resins
Rigid resins for non-aqueous solutions
Most industrial resins, adsorbents and ion exchangers on the market are optimised for aqueous solutions, that is water and water-rich mixtures. Few perform well where water is absent or present only as a small fraction.
Conventional ion exchange resins have low cross-linking. They work well in water, but in non-aqueous solutions they either collapse or become incompatible, because they cannot retain their physical morphology in hydrophobic environments.
Redstone has developed a set of highly rigid resins (RR) for non-aqueous solutions: organic solvents, complex extracts from supercritical CO2 treatment, essential and natural oils and other hydrophobic liquids. They offer performance where conventional resins do not, across a range of surface chemistries and selectivities for food, flavour and fragrance, pharmaceuticals and related areas.
These new resins are unique and offer performance and functionality in hydrophobic environments where conventional resins do not perform. The different resins offer a good variation of different surface chemistries and thus different selectivities that can be applied in a broad variety of applications in food, flavor and fragrance, pharmaceuticals or other areas.
Highly rigid TEMIZ Polar RR resins, supplied as opaque white beads in the 200 to 1250 um range.
Material overview
TEMIZ Polar RR resins are mesoporous, highly rigid polymeric resins that combine non-polar and polar properties, for separation, fractionation, batch binding and scavenging. The backbone is highly stable DVB styrene carrying polar, hydrophilic groups.
Resin properties
| Resin matrix | DVB/Styrene |
| Resin rigidity | Highly cross-linked |
| Particle size | 200-1250 um |
| Porosity | Mesoporous |
| Functionality | Polar RR |
Application areas
Polar RR resins are highly cross-linked and combine hydrophobic and hydrophilic surface groups. Several polar co-functionalities are available, which allows screening for selectivity and binding of a target compound, for both selective retention and fractionation.
The mesoporous structure suits typical organic molecules and excludes most larger ones. Unlike conventional resins, these retain their accessible surface in non-aqueous liquids such as supercritical carbon dioxide, organic solvents and oils, where less rigid resins collapse or fail to perform.
They can be used in batch and suspension mode as well as flow-through in a column. The large particles suit preparative work and sediment quickly in suspension.
Examples of oils, solvents and other environments
- Food oils, like olive oil, linseed oil etc
- Essential oils like citrus or other
- Hydrophobic organic solvents, such as alkanes (hexane, heptane), and a broad range of other organic solutions, solvents and mixtures
- Supercritical carbon dioxide and mixtures
- RR resins also work excellently in water and aqueous solutions (but need a pre-conditioning with eg ethanol)
Examples in oils and hydrophobic liquids
- Removal of unwanted contaminants, for example citrus wax, pesticides or rancid compounds
- Retrieval of valuable compounds, for example when present in low concentrations
- Fractionation of complex mixtures (requires development of a chromatographic method)
- Solid phase extraction after liquid-liquid extraction
- Work-up and clean-up of organic synthetic reactions
