Temiz Polar RR Pyrrolidone to reduce Chlorophyll
Material overview
This is an example of an application of TEMIZ Polar RR Pyrrolidone to reduce Chlorophyll in ethanolic plant extracts. The resin is a highly cross-linked, hydrophobic adsorbent-type polymeric resin for use in separation, batch binding or scavenging in polar organic solutions. We have found that Temiz Polar RR Pyrrolidone is an useful resin with effective binding towards chlorophyll in ethanolic extracts. Compared to hydrophobic resins, more hydrophobic compounds might be less bound, such as lipids from plant cells.

Application example
Chlorophyll is a green pigment, found in all photosynthetic plants, and in some bacteria. In food, cosmetic and phyto-pharmaceutical products, plant extracts obtained by organic solvent extraction contain large amounts of chlorophyll. As chlorophyll may turn brown upon storage, it has to be reduced to obtain an improved extract quality. In QuEChERS, removal of chlorophyll is an important step of the work-up process for food analysis. Applications are in purification of plant extracts:
1) removal of chlorophyll for facilitated analysis
2) removal of chlorophyll for less colored plant extracts in food and cosmetic applications
Example: Dried parsley (1 g) leaves are extracted with ethanol (30 ml) and the green extract is treated with Temiz Polar RR Pyrrolidone (1 ml Resin + 30 ml green extract).
Results: Temiz Polar RR Pyrrolidone reduces the amount of chlorophyll by up to 85 % and renders the cleaned-up green ethanol extract essentially colorless for subsequent processing or analysis.
Regeneration: Bound chlorophyll can be eluted from the resin with eg acetone. The resin regains its capacity to effectively bind chlorophyll in a subsequent resin treatment.
